Our History

BTU Inc. has been meeting since January 2007.

Our key milestones include:

March 29, 2007: A large public meeting establishes a broad consensus in Brattleboro about the value of implementing a district energy system in the town.

October 3, 2007: The project members adopt a resolution specifying the mission, drivers, success criteria, and action plan on which BTU is based.

March 6, 2008: BTU is registered as a non-profit corporation in Vermont.

September 8, 2008: BTU issues a Request for Statements of Qualifications (RFQ) to potential providers of a CHP plant and district energy system feasibility study.

September 16, 2008: Brattleboro Selectboard votes to commit up to $5000 from the town's undesignated revenue as a match for BTU's upcoming application to the Vermont CEDF (Clean Energy Development Fund) for funds to support a biomass fuel supply feasibility study in partnership with BERC, the Biomass Energy Resource Center, located in Montpelier, Vermont.

October 15, 2008: BTU applies to the Vermont CEDF (Clean Energy Development Fund) for funds for a feasibility study in partnership with BERC. The application is not approved.

April 6, 2009: BTU and the Town of Brattleboro jointly awarded a $20,000 Clean Energy Development Fund grant by the Vermont Department of Public Service.
