Thermal-following: a district energy plant that is primarily configured and operated to generate electricity, and which consequently delivers thermal energy (as steam or hot water) in quantities and at times dictated by electric generation objectives.
Thermal-leading: a district energy plant that is primarily configured and operated for thermal energy service, and which consequently delivers electric energy (through cogeneration) in quantities and at times dictated by thermal generation objectives.
Thermal substation: a heat-exchange unit in the building of a district energy customer that moves thermal energy from the system's pipe network to the building's own heating system and hot-water system.
