That it's far more energy efficient to generate heat in a single large-scale boiler, and pipe it around a town to individual buildings through insulated pipes, than to heat each building with its own furnace? In fact, in places like Denmark and Iceland, the insulated pipes can be as much as 30 miles long, with minimal heat loss from the pipes on the way to heat homes, schools, and businesses.
